This particular zone of Monteregio has a unique microclimate. The distinctive features of the mineral composition of the soils – we are at the foot of the Metal-bearing Hills –, the climate of the Tuscan coast, the variation between day- and night-time temperatures and the cool, temperate breezes that blow in from the sea and temper the heat of summer are the outstanding qualities of the Maremma. And no less important is the sunlight, which here has an extraordinarily beneficial influence on the perfect ripening of the grapes. The vines are Cordon Spur or Guyot trained, depending on the variety, with a plant density of 5,000 per hectare. Our vineyard management, inspired by traditional “hands-on” farming methods, is geared towards giving the vines as much energy from the sun as possible, keeping their leaf canopy eminently efficient and seeking an ideal balance between vegetation and fruit so as to guarantee high-quality grapes. The over 160 hectares of vines at Rocca di Montemassi are devoted to the cultivation of two great indigenous varieties of the Maremma, Sangiovese (red) and Vermentino (white), as well as to that of other grapes of outstanding quality: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which in the Maremma, thanks to the very particular light in this area, gives fantastic results, as does Viognier, a white cultivar of exceptional elegance. The Rocca di Montemassi Estate is one of the principal producers of the Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC, which within the space of a decade has become one of Tuscany’s most popular wines in several export markets.
